How to find the perfect wedding photographer

Just how do you choose the perfect wedding photographer? And why is it so important?

Choosing the perfect wedding photographer is an essential part of your wedding planning, as important as finding your dream dress or the perfect venue. But unlike most of the other elements from your wedding, the photographs will live on long after the day.  It is vital to find a photographer who matches your style and taste; someone you really trust to capture the most special moments of your wedding day.

I’ve compiled a few tips to help with your search…

Check out their work

When making your shortlist, make sure you check out your prospective photographer on social media (Instagram, facebook) Remember this will be a display of their best work, so always have a good look at their website too. Most photographers will have a blog where you can see all the photos from a wedding day rather than just the ‘hero’ shots. Don’t forget to check out their credentials by seeing what past clients have said about them. If it’s all hearts and smiles then you’re safe to continue to step two.

Email or phone them

When drafting your first email, make sure to tell  them more than simply the venue, date, and hours of coverage needed. Try and share who you are and your vision for the day. Remember that it’s as important that the photographer feels a connection with you too. Then they may respond in a more personal tone, creating an opportunity for sparks to fly. Better still, don’t just leave it to email, set up a phone call and chat in person.

Meet them

Once you have chatted and made sure that your budget can stretch to your chosen one, meet them as soon as you can. Your photographer will be by your side for most of your day, so it’s important to choose someone you like and get along with. Make sure they’re genuinely interested and invested in your day, their enthusiasm and commitment will go a long way to helping make your day run beautifully. They’ll be able to tell you about how they work, and may even be able to offer help with wedding timelines if you are unsure about the amount of coverage you might need. If you cant meet them in person then arrange a Skype call, that way you can still ask any questions and get a good feel for each other.

Get an engagement shoot

Engagement shoots are not just for a pretty picture on your Save the Date, they’re a great chance to get comfortable in front of the camera, and learn how your wedding photographer works. This will give you a chance to warm to each other before the wedding day, and you’ll get to see how fabulous their photos of you are going to look. A small upfront investment will mean that you have complete trust in your photographer and can totally relax on your wedding day. Plus, engagement sessions are fun!

Book them as soon as you can!

Great wedding photographers can get booked out a year or more in advance, so as soon as you have decided they’re the one for you, get them booked in. Most photographers will only ask a small deposit to hold your date, so better to act fast and know that they’re yours for your day than delay and possibly lose out.

Thanks for reading, and I hope these tips help you with your search to find the perfect wedding photographer. All the best for your wedding journey… you have so many exciting times ahead 🙂
